Aaron Sorkin: There really aren’t many moments on The West Wing where I take my hands off the keyboard, and give the actor the ball and say, “It’s yours now.” You can’t do that with every actor, but I could do it with every actor on The West Wing. CJ has to breakdown without the help of any words at all. Allison had to kind of go from 0 to 100 by herself.
Allison Janney: That was unbelievably hard to do. In Times Square? That was very challenging. There was a guy that bumped into me. He hit me – and I love Alex Graves the director for this – I think he told him to hit me. It really knocked it out of me, and I started crying because I was so upset.
Aaron Sorkin: I told Alex to tell him to hit you.
Allison Janney: (laughing) All these people in Times Square were standing across the street, all watching me. I was performing literally on Broadway, more than I’ve ever been on Broadway before. It was really challenging. It was late and cold and rainy. I was like, “Please, I’m getting this.” Then that guy hit me, and I was like, “Oh, thank God!” And I felt this wave of emotion.
